INCM supplies sustainable cards to the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union 2021

January 28, 2021

The Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office (INCM) provided the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union (PPUE 2021) with the identification cards adopted by the accreditation process, recycled and environmentally friendly. Constructed from recycled PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol), they are designed to contribute to a lower environmental impact on the planet. All these cards are guaranteed by the Mission Structure Accreditation Center of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2021 (EMPPUE).

The cards delivered to EMPPUE identify all those who wish to access the events organized by PPUE 2021. With a design conceived by the mission structure, INCM was responsible for producing and printing the back of the card. The front of the card, with photo and name, is prepared to be printed on the spot, whenever necessary.

For INCM, this is a milestone in the production of cards. About 20 thousand cards have already been produced and delivered, with another 2 thousand ready to be made available. The entire life cycle of this product was analyzed, from the origin of the raw materials, through production, until the end of the cycle, in order to evaluate how recycled PETG would be the best material option for the new cards.

Andreia Cardoso, innovation manager at INCM, explains that “the use of recycled materials must be a basic and mandatory measure for improving environmental quality. This commitment, together with breaking the waste cycle and increasing recyclability, will have unimaginable environmental impacts. Regarding the future, it is necessary to continue looking at the entire life cycle of materials, and not just for one of the stages and not just for the present. Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present without affecting future generations, always with nature, natural resources and future generations as the primary thought ”.

Recyclable PETG is a type of polyester that does not release dangerous substances from the beginning to the end of its life cycle. This type of constitution allows its recycling and incineration to take place without the emission of harmful gases. Furthermore, it is an energy efficient alternative. By recycling plastic, 80% of the total energy spent on making new plastic products is saved, as well as reducing the amount of virgin plastics and water consumption.

Based on the principles of circular economy (reduction, reuse, recovery and recycling of materials and energy), the use of recycled PETG has become an INCM choice. Currently, INCM is developing a set of projects that aim to implement these cards, nationally and internationally, working only with certified and audited companies.

In addition to these identification cards, there are also other environmentally friendly cards that will be used in events organized by PPUE 2021 and that take place in Portugal. These cards, supplied by another entity, are produced from recycled cotton fibers and incorporate plant seeds so that, after use, they can be planted and these plants can germinate. These cards provide access to technical meetings and have a holographic label produced by INCM.
