Commemorative Coin of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union goes into circulation today

January 4, 2021

The Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office (INCM) celebrates the year in which Portugal assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union with the launch of a 2 euros coin referring to the theme. This will be the first commemorative coin from the 2021 Numismatic Plan.

It is the fourth time that the country has assumed this leadership, this time under the motto “Time to act: for a fair, green and digital recovery”. With the pandemic that has plagued the world in the past year, it is now the responsibility of the Presidency to define specific priorities and lines of action on the economic recovery and social development of the European Union.

Bearing this in mind, the coin, designed by Eduardo Aires, illustrates, through a simple image composed of lines that have the same point of origin - Portugal -, the relations of a country with the rest, both economically and socially, territorial and even digital.

Gonçalo Caseiro, Chairman of the INCM Board of Directors, says that “this is a coin that reinforces the mission attributed to INCM and the position of Portugal within the European Union in this position that unites them. When circulating throughout Europe, it will certainly be another symbol of the commitment that the country will assume in the coming months that will remain in the collective memory”.

This coin will be issued in normal, proof and BNC versions, all of which can be purchased at INCM physical and online stores.
