February 6, 2018

On 1 February the Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe, Patrice Trovoada, presided over the presentation ceremony of the new São Tomé electronic passport, at the Migration and Borders Service (SMF) facilities in São Tomé.

This extremely significant project for São Tomé and Príncipe, developed in partnership with the Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office, puts the country at the forefront in the world when it comes to issuing latest generation electronic passports in accordance with the most recent recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

In addition to the production of a new model of high security passport booklets, this project includes the development and implementation of a full issuing solution, which includes an exclusive PKI, integration with biometric data collection equipment and intensive technical training to ensure that the solution can be operated in São Tomé and Príncipe by members of the SMF.

The new passport contains a cryptographic chip that securely stores citizen biographic and biometric data, leading to a very significant increase in border security and control and cross-border mobility of citizens.
