Manucure show presented at the Imprensa Nacional Library

November 3, 2014

Last Friday the actor João Grosso, accompanied by beater Jorge Albuquerque, breathed life into the poem Manucure, by Mário de Sá-Carneiro, at a show open to the public as part of events to mark the centenary of the publication of Orpheu magazine, held at the Imprensa Nacional Library.

The piece, directed and interpreted by João Grosso, starts from the dramatic situation proposed by Mário de Sá-Carneiro in his provocative text with a futurist slant: a character finds himself in a café, moved by his own sensation of tenderness, and progressively becomes immersed in chaos and madness.

With José Carlos Nascimento in charge of lighting design, the show gave spectators a mixture of theatre, recital, concert and "sound plastic", with the poem's words and onomatopoeia transformed into rap thanks to the vocal modulations of João Grosso and the beatboxing of Jorge Albuquerque.
