INCM presents the world's first eccentric coin at the World Money Fair

February 7, 2014

INCM presented the world's first bimetallic eccentric coin at the World Money Fair, the largest money fair in the world, held in Berlin between the 7th and the 9th of February.

This bimetallic eccentric coin, with ongoing patent registration, is a numismatic innovation created and developed by the INCM to celebrate the centenary of the first commemorative coin issued under the Republic.

In order to produce this coin, new minting mechanisms and procedures were developed, that have allowed to put a silver disc, replicating one face of the Republic's first commemorative coin, from 1914, and a gold disc, of smaller size, reproducing the face of the last escudo, issued in 2001, together in the same coin.

The result of this new minting process is an irregular diameter bimetallic coin, designed by Nuno Caetano, with a face value of 2.50 euro. Its issue is limited to 2,500 copies with proof finishing and it is expected to be launched next October.
