June 27, 2014

A commemorative coin was presented yesterday at the Cordoaria Nacional building to mark 100 years of military aviation. Present at the ceremony were the Air Force Chief of Staff, General José Pinheiro, the president of the Belém Parish Council, Fernando Rosa, the President of the Air Force Historical-Cultural Commission, Lieutenant-General Mimoso e Carvalho and António Osório, Chairman of the INCM's Board of Directors.

2014 sees 100 years of Portuguese military aviation; this milestone was marked by the INCM with the minting of a commemorative coin created by sculptor José Simão. The design of this coin highlights the history of military aviation. Its obverse features the pioneers of aviation, with a seaplane flying over the sea, and its reverse shows an F16 fighter over land on a mission; two faces, past and present, connected by the flight path of the aircrafts.

The issue of the coin, with a face value of 2.50 euro, is limited to 2,500 copies in 925 ‰ silver with proof finishing, presented in cases with guarantee certificates. Also available are 75,000 coins in cupronickel with a normal finishing. Both coins can be acquired from INCM shops and the online store.
