European Composers Coin - Marcos Portugal presented at the National Library

The coin dedicated to Portuguese composer Marcos Portugal is part of the Europa Series, which chose "European Composers" as the theme for 2014, and was officially presented yesterday at the National Library of Portugal.

The presentation was entrusted to António Osório and Rodrigo Brum, representing the INCM, Sílvia Sequeira, responsible for the Music Area of the National Library and Professor David Cranmer, from the Department of Musical Science of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, who delighted the audience at the end with a music interlude, playing some pieces by the Portuguese composer on the piano, accompanied by the opera singer, Ana Paula Russo.

Marcos Portugal (1762-1830) was one of the most productive Portuguese composers of all time, having composed several dramatic works, including around 40 operas, and numerous works of sacred music.

The coin, by sculptor Paula Lourenço, pays homage to the composer and has a face value of 2.50 euro and a limited issue of 2,500 copies in 999‰ gold and 7,500 copies in 925‰ silver, with proof finishing, presented in a case with a guarantee certificate, and 100,000 in cupronickel, with normal finishing.
