A coin to celebrate the centenary of the University of Lisbon

March 2, 2012

The coin commemorating the centenary of the University of Lisbon, designed by sculptor Ana Gorgulho, was officially presented on the 1st of March, during a ceremony that took place on the university rectorate building.

During the event, attended by the University of Lisbon's rector, Sampaio da Nóvoa, there was also the opportunity to honour sculptor João Duarte, professor in that institution for several years as well as creator of a number of coins and medals produced by INCM and who was recently awarded the J. Sanford Saltus Award, that is considered the "Nobel prize" of medal making.

The coin to celebrate the centenary of the University of Lisbon, with a face value of 2.5 Euro, issued in silver with proof finishing and in cupronickel with normal finishing, shows the representation of a ship in the obverse. The same symbol, the ship with its four sales hoisted, is also shown on the reverse, flanked by two ravens, as well as a representation of a capital, suggesting the civilising activity of universities and making reference to humanism.
