First bi-metallic eccentric coin in the world presented at Casa da Moeda

October 6, 2014

The first bi-metallic eccentric coin in the world, which marks the Centenary of the First Commemorative Coin of the Republic, was presented at Casa da Moeda today during a ceremony in the presence of the Secretary of State for the Treasury, Isabel Castelo Branco, who minted a copy of the coin.

Isabel Castelo Branco stated that «it was an honour» to have had the opportunity of minting a copy and congratulated the INCM, believing the coin to be «another example of the creativity and implementation capacity which are the ex-libris of this company, which has such a long history».

Besides the coin’s beauty, the Secretary of State for the Treasury also pointed out the technical characteristics which make it unique, believing it to be «a serious candidate for another international award».

Whilst Rui Carp, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the INCM, underlined the role of the «Casa da Moeda’s artists and experts» who made it possible to mint this «coin which is evocative of the Republic’s first one Escudo coin and at the same time, evocative of the last coin minted before joining the Euro», a coin of «great beauty, which makes our country very proud».

Designed by Nuno Caetano, this numismatic innovation, created and developed by the INCM, is the result of an unprecedented minting process, which unites, in the same coin, a silver disc, replicating one of the faces of the first coin commemorating the 1914 Republic, and a smaller, gold disc, which reproduces the face of the last Escudo, issued in 2001.

On the reverse, we can see Casa da Moeda's former building in Rua de São Paulo, in Lisbon, where the 1914 coin was minted, and a detail of the entrance to the current Casa da Moeda, where the 2001 coin was minted.
