INCM regrets the loss of the plastic artist Espiga Pinto

The INCM regrets the loss of the plastic artist Espiga Pinto, author of various coins produced by the INCM, who passed away yesterday, in Oporto, aged 74, leaving the Portuguese art world poorer.

Born in Vila Viçosa, José Espiga Pinto held more than 80 individual exhibitions and numerous collective exhibitions throughout his artistic career, filled with works of painting, drawing, sculpture and medallic art.

His work received various awards, namely the São Paulo Biennial Award, in 1973, and he is represented in Portuguese and foreign public and private collections, namely at the José de Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Centre, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Museu do Desporto (Portuguese Sports Museum) and the National Museum of Contemporary Art - Museu do Chiado.

Among the works carried out for the INCM, of note are the «International Year of the Oceans» coin, which was awarded the Coty Award - Best Commemorative Coin of the Year, attributed by World Coin News in 2000, the «A Passarola – Europe Series» coin, in 2007, the «Camões – Universal Portugal Series» coin in 2010 and the «Encounter between Two Worlds – Ibero-American Series» coin in 2013, as well as the «Commemorative Coin for the Centenary of José Marinho», in 2004.
