Presentation of the work Coleção Numismática D. Luís (King Luis' Numismatic Collection) at the Ajuda National Palace

May 23, 2014

The book Coleção Numismática D. Luís was published by the INCM in partnership with Fundação da Casa de Bragança, and was presented yesterday at the Ajuda National Palace.

José António de Arez Romão, a member of the History and Navy academies, was in charge of the presentation, which was attended by the Director-General of Cultural Heritage, Nuno Vassalo, the Chairman of the Executive Board of Fundação da Casa de Bragança, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of INCM, António Osório and the Director of the Ajuda National Palace, José Alberto Ribeiro.

The work Coleção Numismática D. Luís, by Javier Saéz Salgado and José A. Godinho de Miranda, provides an insight into one of the largest and most important numismatic collections in Portugal, comprised of a total of 9275 coins from the 4th Century BC to the 19th Century.

The book includes Portuguese coins ranging from the reigns of Afonso Henriques and Pedro V, as well as Greek-Roman, Suevi, Visigoth and Moslem coins, some of which are considered to be extremely rare, minted in gold, silver, copper or silver-copper alloy, reflecting King Luís' interest in numismatics.
