The Helder Batista "Medals with History" Exhibition

March 6, 2012

The exhibition entitled "Medals with History", representing four decades of the creative production of sculptor Helder Batista – a renowned name in the Portuguese medal making field – was inaugurated at 5 p.m. on the 5th of March in the hall of the Casa da Moeda building. The exhibition will be featured at this location until the month of June.

During the inauguration ceremony, the chairman of INCM's Board of Directors, Estêvão de Moura, highlighted the grandeur of the work done by master craftsman Helder Batista in the fields of numismatics and medal making and placed particular emphasis on his 23 years sitting on the Numismatics Council; the chairman took advantage of the occasion to underline the INCM’s concern for the preservation and development of medal making as an art form.

Following this, sculptor Helder Batista, who on the day of the inauguration was celebrating 80 years of age, made a point of mentioning that the best way to view his medals is to enter into a "dialogue with them", walking around them while trying to interpret their meaning. He gave this invitation to the large throng of people present, who listened attentively to his words.

Among the works on exhibition are found several medals produced by the INCM, such as the medal to commemorate the World Tree Day and the commemorative medal of the Centenary of the Death of Oliveira Martins, among others.

Anyone who does not want to miss this opportunity to see "Medals with History" by master craftsman Helder Batista may come to the exhibition in the hall of the Casa da Moeda building, on Av. de António José de Almeida, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
