Cultural Responsibility

ONE OF OUR FUNDAMENTAL PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY.
BECAUSE THE FUTURE IS ALSO MADE OF CULTURE.

At INCM – Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda we are committed to our mission of promotion and defense of the Portuguese language and culture, and the important role it represents for society.

To ensure this commitment, we have a cultural responsibility plan, integrated into the Agenda for Sustainability, to which approximately 1% of our turnover is allocated annually, applied to the dissemination of the Portuguese language and culture in Portugal and around the world, in the edition of essential works, supporting the arts, literature and education and preserving and providing access to our heritage.

Imprensa Nacional, the editorial brand of INCM, in addition to following an editorial policy supplementary to the book market, has also reinforced its commitment to digital and democratization, inclusion and equity in access to reading and culture. An example of this is its audiobook collection, which allows everyone access to great classics of the Portuguese language, or the free availability of several titles in digital format.

Support for literary creation, in the Portuguese language, is materialized in the promotion of five Literary Awards in the various geographies of Portuguese and in the most diverse quadrants: from prose to poetry, passing through essays and translation.

We also seek to promote a culture of citizenship and information through the Vicente Jorge Silva for Excellence Journalism Award and the Diário da República Award.

The establishment of protocols and partnerships with various institutions — mainly in the sphere of public cultural operators, but also private ones —, which share the basic principles of INCM’s editorial mission, has also contributed to a dynamic that allows improving and expanding the editorial offer that places available to citizens.

As an example, the exhibition catalogs of several National Museums and Palaces are part of this extraordinary editorial activity, through a protocol established with the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage.
